Seniors Maria Tornqvist (Stockholm, Sweden) and Diego Ortega (Vitoria, Spain) were named valedictorians of the 2014 graduating class. Tornqvist is a member of the Lady Seahawks Women’s Soccer team, while Ortega is member of the Seahawks Men’s Tennis squad. “We are incredibly proud of Maria and Diego and their successes in academics and athletics,” said Northwood Director of Athletics Nick Davidson. “It takes a special person to be able to balance the demand and pressure of being a student-athlete while performing at such a high level in both areas.”
Tornqvist was a four-year player for the Lady Seahawks, serving as a stalwart in the defensive backfield. Maria suited up for 74 games over four seasons, registering six goals and 15 assists. During her four-year run, the Lady Seahawks posted a 62-14-4 record, including a 35-0-1 mark in The Sun Conference, en route to four straight regular season championships. As a senior, Tornqvist helped guide the Seahawks to their highest national ranking, #2, and a Final Four appearance in the NAIA National Championship. A two-time All-Sun Conference honorable mention, and a two-time Academic All-Conference selection, Tornqvist plans to join the Lady Seahawks coaching staff for the 2014 season.
Ortega returns for his senior season with the nationally-ranked Men’s Tennis team. During his final campaign, Diego has been one of the Seahawks top singles play performers, amassing an 8-4 record playing out of the #5 singles position. Ortega has been a two-time Academic All-Conference selection for his efforts in the classroom, capped off with his valedictorian selection.
